Brief: Fast ideation and concept wireframing of the future state mobile app for ABC Health.

Duration: 3 weeks

Role: Lead UI/UX Designer

ABC Health is one of the world’s largest health communities where people feel comfortable talking about their personal experiences and sharing sensitive health information.

The product should engage with peers who share similar experiences related to their health conditions across various condition-specific support communities.

Problem

We wanted to understand what problems ABC Health is facing and how those problems affect their business. Meeting with their CEO, Product Managers, and other team members, we agreed that the business is currently facing 3 main challenges:

  1. We want to start collecting the personal data from members. The main challenge is to encourage them to gather this data. They need to be able to understand why they’re doing it and their benefits after doing it.
  2. How do we present this information (collected data) to a member in a way that is meaningful to them and easy-to-digest at the same time? We need to understand what kinds of visualization methods can we apply to make this presentation more valuable and intuitive for them.
  3. We need to create an experience that would give a member an understanding of whether he/she is “normal”. For example, we can let them know what other members of their community do in a specific situation or with a specific condition. In other words, finding an answer to a question: “is it normal for me to have a migraine for X number of days during XYZ condition? Is there any treatments/medications I should be considering?”

Research and Discovery

During the Discovery phase with their team and internal whiteboarding sessions with our Design team, we discussed the client’s business goals and objectives, we went through their current user flows and web experience, and tried to understand users’ needs, frustrations and pain points. The notes, moodboards, flows, and diagrams were captured through whiteboarding exercises in FigJam.

Solution

In the course of this exercise, the main goal was to differentiate ABC Health from the rest of apps in the Healthcare industry not only by applying data visualization tools, but also by engaging users in different activities, rewarding them for completing various tasks. Users should be able to feel comfortable and motivated sharing their personal data, and should want to come back to the app using it on a regular basis.

The initial app pitch consisted of the user flows, IA, and low-fidelity sketches of the main vertical screens. We started with the Main Dashboard and moved on to the Daily Feelings Tracker.

Even though Initial ideas incorporated gamification principles, we paid close attention to Human Behavior Dynamics and Human-Centered Design principles to focus on people in order to create the experience that is appropriate for them. We tried to empathize with users and solve the key problem through the following behavior dynamics:

One-Up Dynamic

User experience should engage users, therefore it needs to be gratifying and rewarding. Users should “compete” not only with themselves and their own daily results, but also with their community members, friends and global app users.

Community Dynamic

Users are aware and reminded that they are among similar people with whom they can communicate, share, learn and celebrate their achievements.

Progression Dynamic

Users should complete an action and then see and feel forward movement with each action or submission. The app should reward them for it.

Hitchcock Dynamic

Users should know there is always more to learn and achieve.

Status Dynamic

Sense of achievement that something was done which also motivates users to return to the app and use it on a daily basis.

Smart Dynamic

Users experience a constant sense of self-improvement through learning and flexing their knowledge.

In our suggested experience, we achieved these engagements through introducing progress displays, tracking bars, user rewards of loyalty programs, quizzes to flex knowledge and revise relevant info, badges and rewards.

We especially tried to encourage learning and participation through the following activities/interactions:

  • Get users rewarded if they complete any educational activity which should help them to get to know about community events, news, new medications in the market.
  • Share their results not only with community members in the app itself but also in their personal social media accounts (if desired).

The final step of this exercise was to present a couple of high-fidelity interface visuals by quickly adding fidelity to a few previously created wireframes and trying out a few different color skins based on company’s brand guidelines.
